Trauma results from an exposure to an incident or a series of events that are emotionally disturbing, deeply distressing, or life-threatening - both real and perceived - that have lasting effects on an individual’s functioning and mental, physical, social, emotional and/or spiritual wellbeing.

Trauma can shatter a person’s sense of safety and security and leave them feeling helpless and hopeless. It can overwhelm their ability to cope and profoundly effect the ability to enjoy life.

Too often, people who experience trauma spend most of their energy trying to bury the memories. But as amazing as the brain is at protecting a person after a traumatic event, the buried trauma does not go away on its own. Side effects from dormant trauma can include substance use, isolation, depression, anxiety and a host of other diagnoses that make normal daily functioning nearly impossible.
